12가지 키워드로 한국의 매력 발견하기
한국은 한국이다.
우리는 이 책을 만들면서 이런 생각을 더욱 확실하게 갖게 되었다. 한국의 역사는 5천 년을 헤아린다. 이 긴 시간 동안 한국인은 세계 어느 나라와도 다른 정신적, 물질적 성과를 이루어 놓았다. 한국 고유의 말과 글과 예술과 철학과 생활 방식과 정신 세계를 발전시켜 온 것이다. 다시 말하면 한국인은 지난 5천년 동안 이 세상에 하나밖에 없는 아름답고도 소중한 문화를 창조해왔다.
우리는 한국을 잘 모르는 외국인들에게 한국의 겉모습이 아니라 내면을 보여주고 싶었다. 한국인은 누구인지, 한국인들은 무엇을 먹고 무슨 생각을 하며 살아왔는지, 또 오늘의 한국인들은 어떻게 살고 있는지 말해주고 싶었다. 조금 문학적으로 표현하면 한국인과 한국이라는 나라의 영혼을 보여주고 싶었다.
한국을 대표할 수 있는 문화 상징물은 음식과 문화유산, 종교와 생활 방식에 이르기까지 그 어느 민족에 뒤지지 않을 정도로 아름답고 다채롭다. 우리는 한국의 매력을 보여주기 열 두 가지 문화상징을 선별했다. 그 가운데 몇 가지를 간단히 설명하면 다음과 같다.
한국의 음식인 김치는 2006년 미국의 건장전문지 <헬스>에서 세계 5대 건강식품으로 선정되었다. 한복은 한국인의 고유 의상이다. 심플한 디자인에 곡선과 직선의 아름다운 조화로 빚어진 한복은 한국인의 모나지 않은 심성과 미학적인 감성을 잘 나타내준다. 한국인은 한글이라는 고유한 말과 글자를 가지고 있다. 세계의 언어학자들은 세계에서 가장 과학적이고 체계적인 문자로 주저하지 않고 한글을 꼽는다. 불국사는 2000년의 역사 도시 경주에 있는 불교사원이다. 돌과 나무로 만든 불국사는 유네스코가 인정한 한국 건축의 백미이다. 태권도는 세계인이 배우고 싶어하는 무예이며, 인삼은 그 학명이 만병통치약이라는 뜻을 가졌을 만큼 뛰어난 약재이다. 한국은 예술적 재능과 음악성이 뛰어난 세계적인 예술가를 많이 배출했다. 비디오아트의 세계를 개척한 백남준, 바이올리니스트 정경화, 하늘이 준 목소리의 주인공 조수미 등이 그들이다. 이들은 세계로부터 한국이 예술과 문화의 나라로 인정받는 데 주춧돌 구실을 하고 있다.
처음 이야기로 다시 돌아가자. 우리는 이 책을 통해 외국인들이 한국의 겉모습이 아니라 내면의 매력을 발견할 수 있기를 소망한다. 그리하여 모든 독자가 세상에 존재하는 또 하나의 문화를 가슴에 담고 살아가기를, 간절히 소망한다.
이 책이 나오기까지 많은 사람들의 도움을 받았다. 우리에게 많은 영감을 준 시인 이지혜와 가구 디자이너 송재민, 화가 이종송에게 감사한다. 또 아름다운 음식을 만들어 준 한국요리연구가 김영희, 훌륭한 음식 사진을 제공해준 사진가 양현모, 한복의 세계화를 일구어 가고 있는 패션디자이너 이영희에게도 감사의 인사를 전한다. 마지막으로 이 책이 나오도록 출판지원금을 후원해준 한국국제교류재단에게도 감사한다.

12 cultural symbols showing the true inside of Korea
There is no place like Korea.
This basic belief has been reinforced during the long arduous process of making this book. Korea boasts 5,000 years of history. During this long history, its people have reached spiritual and physical achievements which have been uniquely Korean. They developed their own spoken and written language, art, philosophy, lifestyle, and spiritual world. In otherwords, Koreans have for 5000 years created a beautiful and precocious culture, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere in the world.
We hope that this book will help those within the international community who do not have much knowledge about Korea develop a feel for not only Korea’s external beauty, but for its internal one as well. We hope that this work will shed some light on who traditional Koreans were, what they ate and what they thought, as well as into the lifestyles of modern Koreans. In essence, we wanted to use literary devices to highlight Koreans and the spirit of Korea.
Whether it be its food, cultural legacy, religions or lifestyles, Koreapossesses endless symbols which can be said to be representative of its culture. We have selected 12 cultural symbols with which to showcase the lure of Korea. Let us explain each of these briefly.
Kimchi, the symbol of Korean food, was selected as one of the five healthiest foods in 2006 by the American magazine . The Hanbok is the name given to Korea’s traditional clothes. The Hanbok, which consist of simple designs created through the harmony of curves and straight lines, is representative of Koreans’ harmonious nature and aesthetical emotions. Koreans also have their own language and writing system known as Hangeul. Linguists have not hesitated to identify Hangeul as the most scientific and systematic writing system in the world. Bulguksa is a Buddhist temple located inthe 2000-year old historical city of Gyeongju. Bulguksa, composed of stones and wood, has been labeled by UNESCO as the essence of Korean architecture. Taekwondo is a martial art that people the world over have flocked to learn, and Insam, whose scientific name in effect means a universal panacea, is a product which boasts outstanding medicinal effects.
Korea has also produced numerous world-class artistswhich have exhibited their artistic genius and musical talents on the global stage. These include amongst others the founder of video art Paik Nam-june, violinist Chung Kyung-hwa, and the Soprano blessed with a voice from the heavens Jo Sumi. These artists have played an important role in fostering Korea’s image as a land of arts and culture.
Let us go back to the beginning of this story. It is our fervent hope that this book will help people the world over to discover the internal and external lure of Korea, and that all of those who read this book will develop a special affection for Korean culture.
