Gu-su Jang, Ph.D. is a senior chemical engineer with 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. He obtained a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Yeungnam University in Gyeonsan, a M.S. degree in chemical engineering from Chungang University in Seoul, and a Ph.D. in polymer engineering from Pusan National University in Busan, Korea. From 1989 to 2015, Dr. Jang was a lead engineer at GS Caltex Oil Co. working on energy conservation and environmental emission reduction in the refinery & petrochemical complex units. From 2006 to 2009, Dr. Jang was dispatched to the U.S. to expand the fired heater maintenance business for GTC Technology Co. Ltd. in Houston, Texas. For three years, he successfully developed new business markets in Japan, China, Taiwan, India, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Venezuela, Curacao, Mexico, Aruba, Turkey, Li thuania and Russia. Addi tionally, he presented as a guest speaker in numerous international meetings including the 34th CHT Activity Committee Meeting in India and 3rd Refining China Conference in China. Since 2016, Dr. Jang has served as a consultant and worked for companies including Shinhan Apex Co. Ltd, Koins Co. Ltd, and Enpower Co. Ltd. He continues to provide insight and technical suppor t for detailed processes including the manufacturing of a flat plate heat exchanger, the maintenance of oil and gas pipeline pigging, and the chemical cleaning process for furnaces.
Fired heaters are vital in the refining and petrochemical industries, as they are crucial components to key refinery process units. Generally a significant amount of energy is provided to the unit through the fired heater by the combustion of fuel, usually in the form of gas or oil. Frequently the successful operation of the entire unit is directly influenced by how the fired heater works. Therefore, learning about the design, operation, maintenance and revamp of the fired heater can maximize the process unit profitability in many ways. Proper application of knowledge in the fired heater can increase the heater¡¯s capacity, decrease the operational costs, achieve more stringent emissions limits, increase reliability and flexibility of the process unit operation and provide tools and devices to optimize the unit control.
