She graduated from Ewha Womans University with a major in English, and worked as a cultural heritage expounder for NGO called Rediscovery of Korea. In 2011 and in 2013, she won the Gold Prizes as the top prize in two Contests, ¡®Storytelling Program with the theme on the Palaces¡¯ and ¡®Contest for Development of Storytelling Utilization Program on Cultural Assets¡¯ by the Cultural Heritage Administration. Presently she is working for Gyeongbokgung Palace Office as the team leader of the Information Center and a cultural heritage expounder.
¡®Changdeok¡¯ means ¡®to let virtues prosper.¡¯ Changdeokgung is one of the five palaces (Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, Gyeonghuigung, Gyeongungung-current Deoksugung). King Taejo who founded the Joseon Dynasty in 1392 moved the capital to Hanyang (present Seoul) in 1394, and built Gyeongbokgung as the primary palace. Changdeokgung was built in 1405 (the 5th year of the third king Taejo) as a secondary palace. It was built at the foot of Eungbong Peak, and the buildings were arranged with the topography taken into consideration.
Changgyeonggung was also built next to it so that the residential area of Changdeokgung could be extended. Changgyeonggung was built at the site of the former Suganggung Palace, where King Taejong lived after he abdicated the throne in favor of son King Sejong. Changgyeonggung was especially built as the residences for three queen dowagers during the reign of King Seongjong, who were Queen Jeonghui (Queen of King Sejo), Queen Sohye (Queen of King Deokjong), and Queen Ansun (Queen of King Yejong). The Rear Garden was shared by Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung, and as they were located to the east of Gyeongbokgung, they were collectively called the Eastern Palaces. (21~22p)
Among the rear gardens of the remaining Joseon Palaces, only that of Changdeokgung has been well preserved, and shows how the architecture and the natural scenery are making superb harmony with each other. Acknowledged for retaining characteristics and beauty of Korean traditional landscaping, Changdeokgung including the Rear Garden has been enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage since 1997. (23p)
The Rear Garden does not allow you to appreciate the whole at just one glance, revealing its other looks whenever you run into different hills and valleys. Its diversity is revealed little by little only when you are deep inside nature. This is not the sight you just see, but the feasible substance you can grasp only when you are willing to breathe with nature and feel with your heart. Just take your time rambling around at a slow pace, and you will capture the very essence of the garden: small ponds, their pavilions chirping birds, murmuring brooks, the sky above, and trees all around them. (252p)
