이솝 이야기로 널리 알려진 동물 우화작가. BC 6세기쯤 활동하였으며 그리스 이름은 아이소포스. 태어난 나라는 트라키아. 또는 프뤼기아라고 말해지고 있으나 분명치 않다. 여류 시인 사포와 같은 시대의 사람으로 사모스섬 사람인 이어드몬의 노예였다고 헤로도토스는 전하고 있다. 후에 자유의 몸이 되어 뤼디앙의 왕 크로이소스를 섬기기도 하고 그리스의 일곱 현인과 함께 코린토스의 페리안도로스의 연회삭에 참석했다고도 전해지지만 진위는 분명치 않다. 이와 같은 일은 헤로도토스와 희극작가 하리스토파네스의 언급으로 뒷받침 되고 있지만 전설적인 인물임에는 틀림없다. 용모가 매우 보기 싫어서 만화의 대상이 되기도 했다고 한다. 1세기 무렵 여러 가지 일화와 기행을 담은 [이솝 전기]가 발간되었으나 14세기에 프라누데스가 이것을 수정하였다.
